ΟΥΚΡΑΝΙΑ: 5,2 ΕΚΑΤΟΜΜΥΡΙΑ ΠΑΙΔΙΑ ΧΡΕΙΑΖΟΝΤΑΙ ΒΟΗΘΕΙΑ
Από τις 24 Φεβρουαρίου, ημέρα της ρωσικής εισβολής στην Ουκρανία, ο απολογισμός των νεκρών και τραυματισμένων παιδιών είναι τραγικός. Συνολικά 5,2 εκατομμύρια παιδιά βρίσκονται σε ανάγκη ανθρωπιστικής βοήθειας. Η UNICEF εντείνει το ανθρωπιστικό της έργο στην περιοχή και απευθύνει έκκληση για βοήθεια.
Μετράμε πλέον πάνω από 100 ημέρες πολέμου στην Ουκρανία. Θα ήταν ίσως «βαρύ» και άδικο να πω ότι συνηθίσαμε τον πόλεμο, αλλά με δεδομένο ότι δεν φαίνεται σχεδόν καμία προοπτική τερματισμού των συρράξεων στον ορίζοντα, αυτή η φρικαλεότητα τείνει να ενταχθεί στην όποια κανονικότητά μας.
Θα πω το γνωστό κλισέ: Οι άνθρωποι δεν είναι νούμερα. Αλλά τα νούμερα από την Ουκρανία σοκάρουν. Όσες συγγνώμες κι αν ζητήσουμε (και) σε αυτά τα παιδιά του πολέμου, οι αριθμοί θα είναι πάντα η θλιβερή υπενθύμιση των όσων συμβαίνουν αυτή τη στιγμή στη χώρα.
Γιατί 100 ημέρες πολέμου σημαίνουν 5,2 εκατομμύρια παιδιά σε ανάγκη ανθρωπιστικής βοήθειας, τουλάχιστον 262 σκοτωμένα παιδιά και 415 τραυματισμένα παιδιά. Τα στοιχεία λένε ότι σχεδόν δύο στα τρία παιδιά έχουν εκτοπιστεί λόγω των συρράξεων.
A few weeks ago, Hanna, 30, was cradling her children in their basement in Kyiv as shells pounded the ground above. After fleeing with her family and finding a safe place to stay in Uzhgorod, a city in western Ukraine’s Zakarpattia Oblast, Hanna is determined to give her one-year-old twins, Solomiya and Myron, a shot at a healthy, peaceful future. Even war will not stop her from getting her children vaccinated. “I believe that vaccination is really the least we can do for our children,” she says. “Not so long ago, many children were dying from dangerous infections or suffering terrible consequences. Now medicine and science allow us to get protected.”
In the past months, millions of Ukrainian families have fled their homes and now face an uncertain future, meaning that thousands of children across the country are missing vital doses of vaccines to protect them from polio, measles, diphtheria and other life-threatening diseases. Before February 2022, steady and measurable progress had been achieved in revamping routine immunization rates to pre-pandemic levels. Now, low immunization rates, coupled with an ongoing polio outbreak, limited access to hygiene, and overcrowded waiting and transit points in others, pose a serious threat of infectious diseases outbreaks in Ukraine.
Here in Uzhgorod, hundreds of displaced families have turned to local health facilities to get their children vaccinated. Some children will see a doctor for the first time, having been born only recently. “I am glad that I found a medical center, where the children and I feel comfortable and where we get everything we need,” says Hanna. “I want to address Ukrainian mothers – vaccination is really the least you can do to protect your child. The family is from Chernihiv in northern Ukraine. When the war started on 24 February, Anatolii decided that the family would be safer someplace else, so they moved to Ivanivka, a smaller village 15 kilometres away from their home. Anatolii says, “People need to understand that it’s not just Mariupol under siege. My city has not had water or food or power for many days. The attacks are endless.”Anatolii is a criminal lawyer by trade, but since the war started his sole focus has been protecting his children.
On 5 March, Ivanivka was occupied by soldiers, going house to house, and demanding to know who was staying in each house. Initially, the soldiers would not allow the family to leave the village, and the situation felt incredibly dangerous. On 6 March, the soldiers allowed the family to leave and try to return to Chernihiv. Andriy was in a car with his mother, his cousin and two of his neighbours, when the car hit a landmine. Andriy doesn’t remember much about the incident, and the doctors say he closes up when asked about it.
He remembers the immediate aftermath, feeling incredibly cold, remembers pulling himself clear of the wreckage, and seeing his mother unable to escape, and dying in front of him. He remembers crying for help, shouting until he couldn’t anymore. Some villagers found him, carried him to safety and alerted the local authorities to transfer Andriy to the Chernihiv hospital. As hostilities continue in Ukraine, children and their families flee their homes to safer places in the country's western regions. There, they're are met by the teams of doctors, social workers, lawyers and psychologists who are coming together to help the millions forced to leave their regular lives behind.
UNICEF, together with partners, remains on the ground in Ukraine to ensure the provision of humanitarian aid to war-affected families and children. In March 2022, UNICEF, in cooperation with the Ukrainian Public Health Foundation, launched 50 mobile teams in 11 regions to ensure outreach to the most vulnerable, providing psychosocial, legal and medical support to children and parents or caregivers affected by the war. The project covers Lviv, Zakarpattia, Ternopil, Chernivtsi, Rivne, Ivano-Frankivsk, Zhytomyr, Vinnytsia, Volyn, Khmelnytsky and Dnipro regions.

Iryna and her father, Vololymyr, 70, fled Kyiv after the constant attacks on the city. At first, they tried to take shelter in a parking lot. Iryna, says, “It was the first time I heard a siren in the city.”
Soon after arriving in Lviv, Iryna gave birth to two twin girls, Veronika and Viktoria, born prematurely at 31 weeks. Sometimes, they need to move to the basement of the hospital, which is being used as a bunker, to take shelter from possible attacks. This upsets Iryna because Viktoria must remain on an incubator, separated from her sister.
Iryna worked as a lawyer-consultant and her father is currently serving in the territorial defense of Kyiv, which prevents him from staying with his daughter. “I really hope that everything will end, and we can go home,” she says.
The war in Ukraine poses an immediate and growing threat to the lives and well-being of the country’s 7.5 million children. Humanitarian needs are multiplying by the hour as fighting intensifies. Children continue to be killed, wounded and deeply traumatized by the devastating violence all around them. Families are terrified, in shock, and desperate for safety.
The past eight years of conflict in Ukraine have already inflicted profound and lasting harm to children. Now, the immediate and very real threat to Ukraine’s children has grown. Homes, schools, orphanages, and hospitals have all come under attack. By 15 March, more than 1.5 million children had fled Ukraine as war continues to ravage the country, with families desperately seeking safety and protection. Meanwhile, civilian infrastructure like water and sanitation facilities have been hit, leaving millions without access to safe water.

- σωτήρια υγειονομικά και ιατρικά εφόδια σε σχεδόν 2,1 εκατομμύρια ανθρώπους σε πληγείσες περιοχές,
- πρόσβαση σε ασφαλές νερό για περισσότερους από 2,1 εκατομμύρια ανθρώπους που ζουν σε περιοχές όπου τα δίκτυα έχουν υποστεί ζημιές ή έχουν καταστραφεί τελείως,
- φροντιστές υπηρεσίες ψυχικής υγείας και ψυχοκοινωνικής υποστήριξης σε περισσότερα από 610.000 παιδιά,
- εκπαιδευτικό υλικό σε σχεδόν 290.000 παιδιά.
Η Εκτελεστική Διευθύντρια της UNICEF, Κάθριν Ράσελ, δήλωσε για τη Διεθνή Ημέρα για την Προστασία των Παιδιών που είναι την 1η Ιουνίου: «Αντί να γιορτάσουμε την επέτειο αυτή, σήμερα, 3 Ιουνίου, βρισκόμαστε στην 100η ημέρα ενός πολέμου που έχει καταστρέψει τις ζωές εκατομμυρίων παιδιών. Χωρίς άμεση κατάπαυση του πυρός και ειρήνη κατόπιν διαπραγματεύσεων, τα παιδιά θα συνεχίσουν να υποφέρουν – και οι επιπτώσεις από τον πόλεμο θα επηρεάσουν τα ευάλωτα παιδιά σε όλο τον κόσμο».
“We don't know what awaits us,” says Iryna, sitting outside a white tent at the logistics centre in Zaporizhzhia. “My daughter does not sleep well. We want to leave Ukraine at least for a while. Just to get some rest and so that my daughter could at least sleep peacefully. We haven't even thought where to go, so far we are going straight to Poland. We are not thinking about anything for now. It is very scary. We have not yet overcome it.”
As hostilities intensify near settlements in the Zaporizhzhia region, many families are forced to leave their homes as quickly as possible amid shelling. They have little time to pack their belongings and often share overcrowded vehicles. At one of the logistics hub in Zaporizhzhia region, refugees are met by volunteers and given the help they need. UNICEF provides essential items like hygiene kits, water, baby food, clothes, blankets, toys and nappies in two UNICEF prefab units serving as a first aid point and mother-and-child space. Given the evacuation sensitivity, UNICEF also provides child protection services to ensure strong monitoring of unaccompanied and separated children and further placement of such children into family based alternative care on a temporary basis.

Έχω την εντύπωση ότι οι 100 ημέρες από την έναρξη του πολέμου σηματοδοτούν τη δυσοίωνη εποχή στην οποία εισήλθαμε. Και όλες οι συγγνώμες του κόσμου δεν θα είναι ποτέ αρκετές για να δικαιολογήσουμε στα παιδιά τον κόσμο που θα τους κληροδοτήσουμε.
